There are two aspects to the sacraments the emerge from the spiritual and liturgical legacy of Christendom. These are the mysteries that have a public, outer manifestation, in the form of rites and rituals, and an inner manifestation. The inner, or esoteric aspect of each, involves a further awakening of the Divine spark within, the full realization of the Imago Dei, and the Heart of the Christos.
The seven mysteries are alchemical transformations of consciousness, stimulated by intentional acts of blessing, and personal choice, propelling the soul ever deeper on our journey. Esoteric Christianity is beautifully captured by Peter Roche de Coppens in his extraordinary book, Divine Light and Fire: Experiencing Esoteric Christianity. Inspired by his work, my life experience with the sacraments, ongoing meditations and the study of comparative mythology and archetypal psychology, I include this section as a meditative work in progress and as a celebration of these Mysteries.
While christian denominations recognize different sacraments and order them differently, I present the seven as a series of mystical spiritual gates leading to the eighth, a lost sacrament, completing the octave of higher spiritual consciousness. For each gate? I offer reflections on history, theology, and a meditation on the relationship between each sacrament and connections to the Christian Kabbalah.
These humble reflections are intended as prayers of praise to Almighty God for the Mysteries of Being to which we are invited as His children.
